About Me
When I was about twelve, Nanny gave me a little brown paper bag with an embroidery hoop and some floss in it.I was so excited! But I had no clue as to what to do with it.So, I put the brown paper bag in my closet and would take it out from time to time just to look at it.It always aroused a sense of anticipated excitement in me–a sort of a longing to do something but I didn’t know what.
It wasn’t until I was seventeen that I went to our local craft store and asked for instructions on how to embroider. From then on, I embroidered everything from baby’s bibs to my husbands shirt fronts.Gradually my knowledge expanded to include silk ribbon embroidery, and now I am currently doing ribbonwork which involves making flowers and leaves separately and then attaching them to fabric.I stitch them onto hats, albums, purses and other items. Recently, I decided to take my skills from a hobby to a business. I did some research on my craft and got lots of good advice from some mentors. My first attempt at selling was at a local craft show. I had three hats on display. I had lots of compliments, but no sales. I continued to increase my inventory and went to many more shows. I'm happy to say that I have made some sales, but more importantly, I've made some wonderful connections with kind women who have been more than willing to go out of their way to help me get started. To these women, I am deeply grateful. At this point, I would like to acknowledge my paternal aunt, Rita. She once owned a hat shop and passed on much valuable information to me which I was able to use. I am very thankful for that. When we are open to advice, our family can be a great resource.
Also, I have a great sense of satisfaction from creating something that I know someone will get pleasure from. Women need to feel good about themselves. One way to do this is by wearing a hat. When they find the right one they feel differently about themselves. I've seen it happen....women stand up straighter, carry themselves with more self-confidence and dignity. They have "Hattitude!"
People take notice when someone is wearing a hat. It's very empowering. I suggest trying on different shapes, colours and sizes until you find the exact one that's right for you. All of my hat embellishments are one-of-a-kind designs made with ribbons, flowers, leaves and jewelry....created by my own hands. I do not mass produce my designs and labor over each one until it feels "just right".
There's no better feeling than when you feel good about yourself from the inside out. And, when I see a woman try on one of my hats and light up with a big smile because she feels special and beautiful, at that moment there's no greater joy for me.
